Albert Nobbs

From director Rodrigo Garcia (Mother and Child), Albert Nobbs is a period drama about the lives of staff at one of Dublin's most luxurious hotels - Morrison's - and the hotel's butler, Albert... a woman who disguises herself as a man to survive. Based on a 19th century play by Irish author, George Moore, this is the second time Glenn Close has starred as the reserved butler, Albert - the first time being in an Off-Broadway play more than two decades ago. Close was one of the main driving forces behind Albert making it to the silver screen, "I became very busy in my career, but the story was always something that I believed would make a wonderful movie," Glenn stated in one of her interviews.

Albert Nobbs is a shy butler who has been hiding a deep secret for some thirty years - ‘he' is a woman who has had to dress and behave as a man in order to escape a life of poverty and loneliness. As Albert begins to question the world she has created for herself, and thinks she may have found a soul-mate, she dares to hope that she might one day live a life free of secrets.

The film has recently been nominated for 3 Academy Awards and 3 Golden Globes. Close puts in a remarkable, heart-rending performance as the complex character and pulls off an incredible transformation. Albert Nobbs is a wonderful drama full of humour, pathos and tenderness and will be available on DVD in May.

Beginners

Oscar nominated

Beginners

Based on his own life, director Mike Mills shows us how deeply funny and transformative life can be even at its most serious moments in Beginners, a joyous and tender film about love, romance, loss and life in all its messiness and beauty.

Beginners ingeniously looks at the turbulations and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of Inglorious Basterds) only months after the death of his father Hal (Christopher Plummer) who had come out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life.

Beginners celebrates new beginnings, however challenging and unpredictable they can be. The film has recently been nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe - both for Christopher Plummer's superbly warm performance as Hal (watch the video!). The DVD is out now.
