First Position
First Position follows the inspirational footsteps of a group of young talented ballet dancers aged nine to sixteen as they struggle to maintain form in the face of injury and personal sacrifice on their way to one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world: the Youth America Grand Prix.
Lifelong dreams are at stake, with hundreds of dancers from around the globe travelling to New York each year, competing for a handful of elite scholarships and contracts. Practice and discipline are paramount, and nothing short of perfection is expected. Struggling through bruised feet and near exhaustion all while navigating the drama of adolescence and family life, First Position combines built-in drama, tension and suspense with exciting and beautifully shot performances. With the diversity of each dancer's backstory coupled with a showcase of awe-inspiring talent, tenacity and passion, First Position recalls documentaries such as Spellbound in painting a thrilling and moving portrait.
We are delighted to announce that 16 year old Australian dancer Emily Seymour who is best known for her outstanding performance on Network TEN's Everybody Dance Now, has been invited by the Director of the Youth America Grand Prix to bypass all audition rounds and compete in this year's competition's finals in New York. The Grand Prix starts Thursday April 11 and Emily will update us on her progress daily through a series of short Vibe app videos. Meet Emily and follow her journey by scrolling below.
Emily has performed in some of the most prestigious competitions in the world including the 2012 Showcase Championships where she was named Dancer of the Year. She also danced as part of the 2013 Isobel Anderson Awards in Sydney, as well as Alana Haines Ballet Competition in Wellington, New Zealand. She was also a semi-finalist at this year's prestigious Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland, where she received scholarship offers to the Ben Stevenson Ballet Academy, Houston, the Ballettschule Theatre Basel, Switzerland and the Royal Swedish Ballet School.
