Don't let your guard down!
31 Mar 2011
We came back from Sundance with a black eye!
Would you bare-knuckle fight your cousin, bite off his nipples and brawl to the death?
These guys would! Meet two families that have been feuding furiously for over a decade, resolving their differences through ritualized, bare-knuckle fighting. Knuckle is the ultimate boxing movie - disturbingly raw, fierce and strictly not for the faint hearted!
Twelve years in the making, Knuckle offers candid access to the rarely seen, brutal world of the Traveller community. The Travellers are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group from the UK and Ireland with their own customs and a deep sense of clan pride. When conflicts arise within the community, arguments are often settled through dangerous underground, bare-knuckle fighting.
Director Ian Palmer follows the notoriously guarded community as they engage each other in gritty, underground brawls, resulting in broken bones, serious injury and sometimes death. During this time he becomes privy to a decade-long family feud that forms the central storyline of his documentary, that of the Quinn McDonaghs and the Joyces.
Receiving critical acclaim at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Knuckle is unashamedly violent, yet compulsively engaging. The documentary reveals a world in which a cycle of bloody violence seems destined to prevail. Knuckle is scheduled to hit the shelves on DVD September 15. In the meantime we'll keep you posted on any up-coming film screenings.
