Cannes 2011

09 Jun 2011

We're very excited to announce what films we picked up at Cannes! First and foremost let's start with the one that's going crazy in the States at the moment - Woody Allen's latest romantic comedy Midnight in Paris (pic above and see tralier below). A love letter to the city of Paris, its artistic history and one man's imagination fuelled by both nostalgia and the dream of a different life. This delightful and playful film stars an array of actors including Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates and Adrien Brody, and will storm onto Australian screens in a few months time.

Cannes was abuzz about our next purchase, Lynne Ramsay's adaptation of Lionel Shriver's acclaimed novel We Need to Talk About Kevin. Highly praised as one of the most fascinating films of the festival, it stars the amazing Tilda Swinton as the distressed mother trying to deal with her troublesome son. Dramatically exploring the nature versus nurture debate, Ramsay has created a fearless and provocative film as remarkable as the book. We'll be releaseing it in late 2011 - watch clip here.

Remember the beautiful film Caramel, we released in 2008, made by the talented director and actor Nadine Labaki? We're proud to announce we'll be distributing her follow-up, Where Do We Go Now? Set in a small Lebanese village, a group of women ingeniously devise a plan to distract the local menfolk in an attempt to defuse mounting tensions. Extraordinarily inventive and often comical, Where Do We Go Now? received a five minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere.

And finally, Sean Penn stars in what could very well be his new Oscar-worthy performance in This Must Be The Place. Penn plays a bored, retired rock star living in Dublin (who looks a lot like Robert Smith - watch clip here), who must return to America after the death of his father, to embark on a road trip that will change him forever. Featuring a terrific soundtrack with music and lyrics by David Byrne and Will Oldham, This Must Be The Place is a genuinely unique film full of warmth, profundity and lots of eye-liner.

So there's a lot to look forward to coming up this and next year. We also bought several very exciting projects from script - which we'll be announcing over the coming months!
