The Girl on the Bridge
Essential Patrice Leconte Volume 2
The second box-set in the Patrice Leconte series brings you three more critically recognised films from the masterful French director. The Girl on the Bridge, The Hairdresser's Husband and Tandem which further testify to Leconte's flair for capturing and exploring the complexities of human desire.
The Girl on the Bridge
Leconte's award-winning The Girl on the Bridge is a masterfully crafted and unconventional tale of love and desire. Young, naive and beautiful Adele (Vanessa Paradis) has drifted through a life of meaningless sexual encounters that have left her desolate. Leaning over a bridge in Paris she meets Gabor (Daniel Auteuil: My Best Friend), an irreverent, philosophical knife thrower. After saving her from a suicidal leap into the Seine he convinces her to risk her life over, as they set out to dazzle the cabarets and casinos of Europe with their act. The couple's chemistry is electric and together their luck insurmountable. But old habits die hard and when Adele is swept off her feet by another fraudulent suitor their lives begin to crumble.
Tandem
Michel Mortez (Jean Rochefort: Ridicule) is an aging radio personality travelling around France to compere a game he created some 25 years earlier. His sidekick producer/assistant/chauffeur Rivetot (Gerard Jugnot) always goes along for the ride and is the only one who really knows what lies under Mortez's playful bravado. When Rivetot hears that the programme is to be axed by the managers, he delays as long as possible having to announce it to Mortez. Tandem is an offbeat and bittersweet comedy with surprising twists and turns.
The Hairdresser's Husband
The Hairdresser's Husband is a sensual and funny love story that is as subtle as it is moving. Since he first experienced the doting pleasure of having his hair cut by a beautiful buxom woman as a young boy, Antoine (Jean Rochefort) fantasised about one day becoming a hairdresser's husband. That fantasy gave way to determined ambition when he met and wooed the dreamy Mathilde (Anna Galiena). Cocooned by their one-room salon they live the simple life, Mathilde cutting hair and Antoine mooching about listening to Arab music and doing crosswords. But as the years of marital bliss pass Mathilde becomes anxious about aging and her ability to uphold Antoine's fantasy.
