Diary of Anne Frank, The
Acclaimed television director Jon Jones (Cold Feet) and writer Deborah Moggach (Pride and Prejudice) joined forces with the Touching the Void producers to create this inspiring adaptation of the timeless classic The Diary of Anne Frank for the BBC.
An important historical document and a captivating literary piece The Diary of Anne Frank details the everyday life of a teenage girl living under extraordinary circumstances. Receiving a diary for her thirteenth birthday Anne began writing just two weeks before her family were forced into hiding from the Nazis, who had intensified their campaign of persecution against Dutch Jews. For two years she recorded her thoughts and dreams from the confined, closeted rooms of her father's Amsterdam office, shared with another family the Van Pels and an old family friend, Fritz Pfeffer, where she experienced her first and only kiss from Peter Van Pels.
Despite the terror and maltreatment around them, the group survived the tense, harsh conditions until 4 August 1944 when the Franks were betrayed and sent to concentration camps - Anne's father the sole survivor. Anne's intimate account of growing up and family life has resonated with generations of readers the world over, selling millions of copies. Dramatisations of her diary however, are rare, making the release of this drama series a very special event. The combination of detailed reconstructions of the house together with heartfelt performances make this a landmark production. A stellar British cast including Ellie Kendrick, Tamsin Greig (Black Books; Green Wing), Iain Glen (Taggart) and Kate Ashfield (Shaun Of The Dead) bring to life the moving chronicle of arguably the most enduring voice of the Holocaust.
